Ten Sixty Stables
Our Rookie of the Year for 2019
With two $10,000 Canadian Hunter Derbies at their two shows this summer, we HEART Ten Sixty. Their first derby at Show Jump for Heart last month was a huge success with 21 of Ontario’s top derby horses entered in an exciting course spanning two rings.
The Derby Whisperer, Kristjan Good who brought his top mounts to compete and won on his great partner Salvo RSF said, “The Show Jump for Heart Derby at Ten Sixty was a fantastic class. The jumps were beautiful, the track spanning two rings on exceptional footing was exciting and challenging. I will be bringing all of our horses back for the $10,000 derby in July.”
Sabrina Ivankovic of Hunter’s Glen, producers of multiple Canadian Champions said, “Ten Sixty did a great job hosting their first Canadian Hunter Derby. We loved how they included both rings on course, which offered something different than we have seen on the eastern circuit. The course was fun and had great options for extra handy points. We were impressed with the turnout and can’t wait to be back in July.”
Wingberry Farms’ Sarah Johnstone added, “We absolutely loved the show. I really enjoyed how they connected the two rings. It was a great experience for both horses and riders. Ten Sixty had snacks and drinks available for horses and riders at their ingates which goes a long way for riders, trainers and parents. It was a real family type of show and we are definitely going back.”
Ten Sixty’s next $10,000 Canadian Hunter Derby is July 28th. We can’t wait.

What do Posh, Cawthra Burns and Henry Equestrian Plan have in common? They have all been with the Canadian Hunter Derby Series since the beginning.
Cawthra and Posh competed in the very first Canadian Hunter Derby Series event on the shores of the Georgian Bay almost 7 years ago when half the town came out to watch, mayor and all! They won a ribbon in the first Hunter Derby Championships at the Royal and have been in the money ever since.
Cawthra won the Bob Rose Memorial award at last year’s Royal as the top amateur rider in the Championships and just like Bob, Cawthra “always jumps the high options”.

Ainsley Vince Wins
$10,000 Hunter Derby at Ottawa International
June 21, 2015 – Ottawa, Ontario – Ainsley Vince of Burlington, ON, and Magic Show led the victory gallop following the $10,000 Canadian Hunter Derby, presented by Faces Magazine, on Sunday, June 21. The event highlighted the final day of competition at the inaugural Ottawa International Horse Show, which ran June 17 through 21 at Wesley Clover Parks in Ottawa, ON.
Owned by Muffie Guthrie and Jeff Brandmaier’s Knightwood Stables of Guelph, ON, Magic Show was imported from Europe several years ago as a hunter derby prospect and has since proved himself on many occasions. At the Ottawa International, Vince and Magic Show earned an impressive score of 109 points from the judges, including a perfect 10 out of 10 for beautifully executing all of the high options.
“Muffie and Jeff have done great things with this horse and I was lucky enough to get to borrow him this week,” said Vince. “He was super. He walked right out there and was all business. He has a great jump, is very scopey, and looks beautiful over fences.”
Fittingly, Guthrie and Brandmaier are also the driving force behind the Canadian Hunter Derby Series, of which the $10,000 Canadian Hunter Derby in Ottawa is a member event. Vince also took eighth position in the final standings with a second entry from Knightwood Stables, Lucky 2 Knight.
A total of 30 entries contested the $10,000 Hunter Derby, featuring a challenging course on the expansive grass grand prix field designed by Tommy Feigel and decorated by Evie Frisque, both hailing from Canada.
Vince was impressed with Feigel's use of the grob and bank options, as well as the improvements to the field at Wesley Clover Parks, saying, “I have been showing here since I was a kid, and it was beautiful out there today. We were lucky to be able to do this class here, and it's great for us in Canada to have another facility that we can go to, especially one of this caliber. It's really exciting to see what they have done so far and even more exciting to see what they're planning for the future.”
Six points shy of the winning score, Taylor Brooks of Vars, ON, and It's Coolman were awarded a score of 103 for second place. Third was presented to Taylor Mulligan of Merrickville, ON, riding Dorado of the Lowlands on an even 100 while Laurie Bucci of Carignan, QC, took fourth place with a score of 97 riding Quatro Z Fortuna. Lauren Ferguson of Almonte, ON, and California Gold rounded out the top five with a score of 93.

The KingRidge King Wins
Canadian Hunter Eastern Derby Finals
September 28, 2013 – ROCKWOOD, ON – Hugh Graham and Textbook dominated the Hunter Eastern Derby Finals held in Angelstone’s Derby Field. Hugh’s complete confidence in his horse paid off with a $3,000 prize presented by Manning Equine.
The challenging course took advantage of the derby fields natural elements by utilizing the bank and the tabletop for riders to earn handy points. The course had seven high options and encouraged riders to ride precisely in the related lines.
Ryan Roy came in second aboard Wendy O’Leary’s horse Cassius. Third went to Kelly Soleau aboard Vianco V/D Rampaarden. Kelly had a lot of confidence in her mount for the class, and felt her horse was ready to handle all of the course designer’s tests. Fourth went to Kristjan Good and Coeur de Baloubet, and fifth place went to Prudence and Ashley McInnis.
The sun was out and shining for the last derby of the year, until National Finals at the Royal Winter Fair in November. Congratulations to Hugh Graham on his Derby win at Angelstone International CSI-W.

Storm de Moens delivered a happy birthday for trainer Mark Hayes when he won the Hayes Co. Hunter Derby, a qualifier for the $50,000 Canadian Hunter Derby Series Championships at the Royal Winter Fair. The class took place at the July edition of Orangeville Show Jumping Tournaments. His stable mate, Coeur de Baloubet owned by Mark and also from Francois Mathy, added icing on the birthday cake when he took third place honors. Both Hayes trained horses received a masterful ride by Kristjan, negotiating a challenging course designed by Pierre Burch of Quebec and judged by renowned hunter expert Randy Roy. The hunter ring was doubled in size for the derby and provided a beautiful large grass derby field showcasing many natural derby jumps including a bank which riders had the option to gallop up to finish the course over the 4’+ log pile at the top.
Mark praised his rider as “a talented young professional with a fantastic attitude". Hayes felt the course tested bravery and talents of both horse and rider.

Langley, British Columbia – Eliza Hunt of Delta, BC, dominated the Dexter Associates Realty Canadian Hunter Derby and earned a $1,000 bonus as part of the SSG Riding Gloves ‘Go Clean for the Green’ promotion. Held Friday, July 5, during the Western Family competition at Thunderbird Show Park in Langley, BC, Hunt scored a hat trick by placing first, second and third.
Now in its third year at Thunderbird Show Park, the ‘Go Clean for the Green’ promotion sees Canadian glove manufacturer SSG Gloves offering a total of $12,000 in bonus money to reward both hunter and jumper riders for their loyalty to the SSG brand.
Hunt earned a near perfect score of 97 to secure the win over 29 entries in the $1,500 Dexter Associates Realty Canadian Hunter Derby. It was only her fourth competition with Rubinus, a 13-year-old Oldenburg stallion by Rubenstein owned by Jennifer and Armin Arnoldt of Dreamscape Farm in Langley, BC, that she began riding in December.
Just a single point behind, Hunt and Farscape DSF, a six-year-old Westphalian stallion by Freestyle and also owned by Dreamscape Farm, finished second with a score of 96. Hunt and Kalan, a nine-year-old Thoroughbred-cross owned by Pat Dumont of Langley, BC, finished third with 91 points.
“The SSG Bonus is a fantastic program,” said Hunt, who was picking up her second bonus cheque from SSG Gloves this season. Hunt previously claimed a $1,000 SSG bonus after winning the $2,500 Dexter & Associates Canadian Hunter Derby riding her own Amigo during the CSI2*-W BC Open held May 29 to June 2 at Thunderbird Show Park.

Canadian Hunter Derby takes Center Stage at Palgrave
Caledon Premier 1 hosted The Canadian Hunter Derby Series event in the new all-weather jumper ring built for the Pan Am games on Thursday evening, June 20. It was a beautiful evening with a large crowd sitting on the grass and in the stands, some piled in golf carts, others tailgating, all enjoying the stunning venue.
The Hunter Derby showcased the 3’6” horses and drew a field of 28 competitors.
Course Designer Chis Brandt and team built a great track, beautifully decorated, with a combination of traditional hunter jumps and derby jumps. There were lots of opportunities to be handy, including: several long gallops, places to leave out strides, inside turns, slices and rollbacks.
The course finished with two side by side natural oxers over large antique barn board boxes. The option oxer was an imposing 4’3”, but with the horses jumping great on the perfectly prepared footing, competitor after competitor gave the high side a try with great results.

Rain is no problem for the
Canadian Hunter Derby at Angelstone
Roberto Teran guides ARK Partners' Jus II to the win
On Saturday afternoon, June 1st, ARK Partners' Jus II made his hunter derby debut and took the top prize with a masterful ride from Roberto Teran in the Manning Equine Hunter Derby at Angelstone, a Canadian Hunter Derby Series event. Jus II is a six-year-old American Dutch Warmblood bred by Majestic Gaits of Brookline, New Hampshire. His sire is Navarone by Jus de Pomme and his dam is O’bert-e-De by Glenridge.
The winning score was a 97.5 (79.5 hunter score +8 for the handy bonus +10 for high performance bonus, jumping all 5 high options on course). Jus II is a two-way star, in addition to the hunter derby win, he was 2nd in the 6 year-old jumpers just days before, continuing the success in the jumper ring Jus II displayed at WEF 2013.
Ark Partners’ Tracey Jackson was "thrilled with Jus II's performance and appreciative of the level of competition in the Canadian Hunter Derby Series."

Taking the second spot was Dee Walker aboard Stella owned by Zoe Meloff. Dee missed the win by just half a point in the hunter score, receiving a score of 97 (79 hunter score +8 handy bonus +10 high performance bonus). Corie Bannister riding Doug Bannister’s Bayview were 3rd. Ainsley Vince with Cawthra Burns’ Posh finished fourth and now leads the Canadian Hunter Derby 3’6” East standings with 16 points.
Although it had rained for several days leading up to the derby, Angelstone’s huge grass main hunter ring was ready to go. However, the day’s events in the equally impressive brand new ESI all-weather hunter ring concluded ahead of schedule and by popular demand the derby was moved to the all-weather surface to ensure competitors the best possible footing.
Dee Walker remarked “great job by course designer Tracy Howard for not only adapting her course so quickly for the new ring, but giving competitors a great riding track with just the right handy options and challenging but fair questions.” It was a great effort by show manager Mike Belisle and the ring crew to handle the changes almost seamlessly.
The next hunter derby is the first week of July at Cedar Run where the derby will be in the grand prix field. The Canadian Hunter Derby Series returns to Angelstone and takes center stage at 6:30 Saturday evening in the Angelstone Stadium’s all-weather grand prix ring during the National Phase II tournament the week of August 28th to September 1st.

Canadian Hunter Derby Series
Opening day in Ontario at Angelstone
Guys sweep top 3 spots
Ontario’s first derby of the year took place at Angelstone Tournaments this past Saturday afternoon. Knightwood Stables’ Magic Show, an eight-year-old year old Zangersheide gelding, with Jeff Brandmaier in the irons topped the scorecard with a 102 in the Dewey McLeod Hunter Derby.
Taking the second spot was Peter Gisborn aboard Eminence, owned by Janet Faloney. Scott McKay and Tovari were 3rd. Cawthra Burns with Posh finished fourth and won the custom stock tie from Hayward as the leading female rider in the class.
Saturday’s course held in Angelstone’s huge grass main hunter ring was breathtaking and included a combination of traditional hunter jumps coupled with more natural obstacles that included log piles, hay bales, birch poles and Dewey’s favorite boxwoodhedge with petunias. Many of the new derby jumps that debuted at the Royal were on course that finished with an option to take a daring gallop with a slice to the Hogan’s Inn oxer - a black riviera gate with brick pillars. Greg Kuti’s course provided an easy way around, but also allowed riders options to take bold approaches, show off the gallop, do inside turn and showcase the horses’ talent over a challenging track.
